Planting bulbs this September

Dramatic lilies, big bold alliums, striking red tulips, delicate fragranced hyacinths and more can be planted in containers or directly into beds and borders between now and December to create a garden bursting with colour by the time spring arrives.

Thanks to the recent wet and mild conditions the soil will be a little more loose for most of us making planting is much easier than in dry compacted soil. For shop bought bulbs always read the instructions, but a good rule of thumb is to plant a bulb three times its own depth and make sure they’re planted before the first frosts. Boost any new additions to the garden by adding a sprinkling of biochar to planting holes to help increase water retention and the supply of nutrients to the roots to produce strong and vital plants that will stand up to drought and frost, improve the overall condition of the soil and support the formation of colloidal humus which helps to improve soil fertility for more vigorous plants, vegetables and crops.

Biochar is also great for the environment as it has the ability to capture carbon by locking it into the soil for hundreds of years, helping to offset your carbon footprint simply by adding it to the soil when planting and tending to the garden.
